Slackware install error
Well, I run Mandrake8.1 nicely, everything seems to work most of the time :p
I wanted to change to Slack8, to give it a bit of a test, so I wiped everything on my linux partitions and went on with the slack install. Everything went pretty much ok, up until the point where I tried to configure X. I get messages saying my card is recognised OK, but it's not picking up my screen and to send scanpci details to the developers. It's a bit of a pity, anyone got any ideas why this might happen? |
Mandrake has a tendancy to spoil you and make you forget how much of a beast X is. X is hard to configure by hand... actually, once you have a working X for a machine+monitor, save the config file /etc/X11/XF86Config to a floppy and keep it handy. It'll work swapping these things in and out between minor versions, but not major ones.
Try ./usr/X11/bin/XFree86 -configure and then follow the direction line it gives you... if that doesn't work, you may want to look everything up by hand about your monitor and video card and then run: ./usr/X11/bin/xf86config and answer all of the questions one at a time. Cheers, Finegan |
