Slackware 8.1 Root Disk Problem
 

Im trying to install slack 8.1, and am completely new to Linux, also am running window 98 atm. I got a fairly old P166 / 24Mb RAM. Right, I've tried and tried to boot off the CD, and even though the option in the BIOS is there, it wont let me, so I've resorted to the boot and root disk option. Got the boot disk fine [bare.i] and when i reboot it all loads up great. The only problem is that everywhere I've looked, all the root disk files [color.gz etc] are all WAY too big to fit onto a floppy. The old root files for 7.3 for example fit on fine, but don't work obviously. I really would appreciate any kind of help. Many thanks - Craig.:Pengy:

For Slackware 8.1 there is actually a series of 5 root disks you have to create (helpfully called install.1, install.2 etc...). Use RAWRITE to create them (also available at the Slack mirrors).

I'm currently running Slack8.1 on a p133 with 49Mb RAM and X can really clog it up even with a lightweight wm like fluxbox. With 24Mb, console will probably work just fine, but X is gonna hurt.

Although i have successfully used the 5 root-disk option, I would highly recommend you download Smart Boot Manager to boot your cd.

SBM will be much, much faster than loading the boot + five root disks, especially with what system resources you have to work with.
