Slackware 10 MySQL

I have no idea what I'm missing, because I've done tons of installs of slackware and mysql, but here it goes. I just finished a fresh slackware install, and mysql won't start. I "su" to mysql, and type "mysql_install_db" then I go back to root, and type "mysqld_safe &" so that I can set the mysql root password, and I get the following output:

mysql@overtimeproductions:/etc/rc.d$ mysqld_safe &
[1] 895
mysql@overtimeproductions:/etc/rc.d$ Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
050119 21:16:38 mysqld ended
[1]+ Done mysqld_safe (wd: /etc/rc.d)
(wd now: ~)

I get the following output in the .err file in /var/lib/mysql/

050119 21:16:35 mysqld started
050119 21:16:36 InnoDB: Started
050119 21:16:36 Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Can't find file: './mysql/host.frm' (errno: 13)
050119 21:16:36 Aborting

050119 21:16:36 InnoDB: Starting shutdown...
050119 21:16:38 InnoDB: Shutdown completed
050119 21:16:38 /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown Complete

050119 21:16:38 mysqld ended

Any thoughts of what could be going on? This is the first time that this has happened to me, and I am stumped.
