slackware 10.0 xmms/gimp lockup

I have a slackware 10.0 on an AMD 2000 XP with 512 MB of RAM and a sound card with the via82xxxx chipset. When I use xmms or gimp, the machine has a tendency to completely lock up ( can't even ctrl+alt+<f1/backspace> out of it )

At first I thought it might have been because I did not get the gnome package series when I installed so last night I downloaded all of the libraries in that series as well as the "gail" package, but they still lock up when I use them.

Any ideas as to what might be going wrong here?
