Unhappy Skype crawls and fails to connect.... help me guys.I need this.

Ok. I have posted something similar to this before but no one knew anything about it...so here is my one last effort to see if this works......
Problem: I installed the latest version of skype and the install seemed to go well. But once i click the icon ..the nightmare starts. It takes approx. 2-3 minutes for the main window to show up (i actually timed this), then another minute for the log-in screen to start-up and after entering the username and password...it tells me that it was unable to log-in. I tried to check my firewall to see if skype was in the active connections list but it wasnt even there.... I dont know what the problem is and would really appretiate it if someone can help me out here....!
I installed skype before and it worked perfectly..but after a fresh Ubuntu install (had to move more GB to UB(untu), it just does not seem to work. I need this guys, Please suggest.
thank you.

PS- I dont think it is a mem problem as I have a 2800AMD with over a 1000MB in mem.

Do you have a high speed connection? This is a must have for VoIP. Did you register your account with Skype? Try logging in on the Skype website to see how that goes. If you have Windows on your machine, try booting into it and installing the Windows version of Skype and see how it runs, that way you can tell if it's a Linux problem or not.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but this is was what I would try.

ok. I know its an issue because it works well in windows and it used to work on Ubuntu before i reinstalled it. Not an Internet conn problem cuz i have a 11mbps hi-speed connection. I will try downgrading it..but what are the qt libs that i need..? I used apt-get and figured that was enough!
Please suggest.

Try to run Skype from the console. Sometimes error messages are shown when you run a program from the console that you cannot see otherwise.

suggestion:
remove skuype, goto skype.com download the static binaries, untar them to something like /opt/skype-<version number>, symlink /opt/skype-<version number> to /opt/skype, symlink /opt/syke/skype to /usr/bin/skype
symlink commands are:
ln -s /opt/skype-<version number> /opt/skype
ln -s /opt/skype/skype /usr/bin/skype

then run skype and see how that goes :-)
qt libraries are what kde uses, gnome will run on gtk, they define things like graphical iface stuff, for eg. displaying certain areas in a window
