Skype and now Google call

I have not been able to get either to work in linux using several different versions of linux. They both work in Windows. There must be a way to configure sound that I do not know. I am using a headphone set. Any advice would be appreciated.

Use alsamixer, make sure mic and capture are both unmuted and turned up.

I use Skype regularly on a variety of linux operating systems and machines. Hands down Gnome wins for ease of use with skype no matter what flavour. Simply click on the volume icon in task bar - choose "sound preferences" - choose "input". In skype options under "audio" turn off "let skype adjust volume". Normally the "default" or "pulse audio" choices are good in the hardware choices.

Light distros do not use pulseaudio so alsamixer or gnomemixer will have to be used to set mic volumes as craigevil points out. It can take a lot of trial and error between the mixers and skype hardware choices to get things up and running.

I've just started using Google call and I must say it works quite well. Nice to have it available to Canadians! Free phone calls to Canada and Usa for the rest of the year. You will still have to get to your mic settings however.

I use both of them, and I am running fedora 13. What distro are you using?

I have tried on Simply Mepis 8.5 and Ubuntu. People tell me that their telephone rings but neither of us hears anything.

I can make google voice calls from my home phone to other phones using linux but cannot use the new call service in gmail.

You try double checking your audio settings just to be sure?

I can't find many audio settings. The mutes are off and all volumes are at max.
