skipping stalled daemon on init

syslogkd (i think that's what it was) is stalling because i was fooling around with my fstab and mounted /var wrong. is there a way i can skip past this so the system will boot and i can fix things up?

The best way to fix a broken /etc/fstab is to boot a rescue system, mount your / partition and edit /etc/fstab. If you don't have a rescue system handy the quickest one to download is tomsrtbt:

that doesn't seem to be an option when your other os is win2k, and can't get to a real dos prompt.

though, i guess i could boot from a dos floppy... really a pain.

i ended up making a slackware rescue disc and fixed things up that way. now that i'm back in linux, i'll have to go about making up one of those tom disks.

but back to the original question, is there a way to skip past a stalled daemon when starting up?

The only way that comes to mind is to boot a rescue system, mount /, and edit one of the /etc/init.d scripts to turn off the boot script that starts the daemon. Maybe somebody else can come up with an easier way.
