Simple scan sees scanner, but cant connect? CAN scanimage from terminal though

Following the above, I can use the bearpaw scanner from terminal to scan.
But simple scan did not work until I ran scanimage from terminal. inexplicably it is now working??? I have no explanation?

Let me make sure I understand you. Simple scan did not work, then you used scanimage from the command line, and since then simple scan has been working. It that a fair summary?

If simple scan continues to work, I doubt that there will be any way to recreate the situation. You might take a look at the log files. A web search tells me that "Log messages can also be found in the $HOME/.cache/simple-scan folder."
