Simple Question: XP and Mandrake 8.2

Hello all,

I've got a laptop with a 40Gb drive that is being used for WinXP (ugh).

I would like to install Mandrake 8.2 in the larger part of a 10/30 split. I started the install and all that is fine, until I come to the partitions.

I would like to resize (without data loss, damn father...) the win partition, but when I go to click on resize, it says all data will be lost.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, or better yet tell me what to do in order to resize this partition without losing it, I would be much oblidged(sp?)

Thanks,

Adam

please don't bump threads after just one hour. this is typicaly a very quiet time of day for the boards.

i'd assume you are using NTFS on XP, in which case you will need some propriety method of resizing, as linux is not able to handle NTFS filesystems correctly. try partition magic among others.

Just for info, as I know the square root of f**k all about linux/IT generally, I have no idea why, but my pc came out of the box with 3 partitions 2 ntfs and one fat 32, with my initial attempt to get the linux installed, it just kept telling me where to go (i.e. unable to resize the fat32 partition which was only 2.5 gig). Anyhow, I ended up using the smaller ntfs partition and re-formatting it as fat32. The linux went straight in - not that that's much help cos I still have to boot back into M$XP as the mandrake 8.2 will not auto configure either my onboard sound device or the usb dsl modem that i've got. And it's starting to really piss me off!

If my memory serves correctly, If you throw the first install disk in (I've got the download version), doesn't it offer you a method of sticking the mandy in there by pinching an empty bit of single ntfs partition?

Failing that, I suppose it'll be just as the acid_kewpie says, partition magic strikes again!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. M$ always seem to issue dire warnings about lost data - they just plain don't want anyone to use anything else except their $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$oftware!!

Sorry acid,

But I'm pretty sure I left it long enough to get a chance to be replied to.

To all the others, thanks. I'm going to go get a copy of Part. Mag. 7.0 and give it a shot from the windows perspective.

Wish me luck,

Adam
