simple MySQL backup

I wondered if it would work as MySQL back up simply to copy the entire /var/lib/mysql folder and if needed copy it right back for restore?

It's used for contents management in a private website

I'm looking for the simplest process, not the best :-)

Yes that should work fine. If you can do it with the tables locked then I think you will be less likely to get corruption.
