Simple email watcher and reader

Running LMDE, fully updated.

I am looking for a simple GUI-only non-KDE email watcher and reader. The only purpose is to monitor system mails, which are forwarded from the root account to the primary user account. exim4 and bsd-mailx are installed and are functioning as expected.

I do not want to launch a full-fledged MUA to read the system mails. I do not want a utility that requires a full-fledged MUA. I want a utility that uses the desktop notification popup system and then supports a simple reader pane to read the mail and not just the headers.

I tested mail-notification. The utility sees the user's system mail box and notification popups work fine. All seems to work as intended except one feature: "Open Latest Message." When I click on the system tray icon I receive the following error dialog:

Unable to open the latest message
Messages of mailbox "System mailbox" cannot be opened.

The "Open Latest Message" option in the context menu is disabled. Reading the Help file implies the problem is mbox format is not supported, which is the format of the system mails.

I can use the context menu to open a MUA, but that is another step in what should be a simple process.

Otherwise the utility nicely notifies the user about any incoming mail.

Any suggestions for such a utility?

Thanks.
