Ok, forgive me if this is obvious to some, but:

How can I play MP3 streams from CLI (command line interface)?

I currently have a linux server at home tied into my stereo system. To play music, I have to ssh over with my linux laptop and run XMMS. From there I can play anything I want, BUT I have to stay connected for the music to keep playing.

What I want to do is setup a web page on my server that I can browse to via linux/windows/palm-pilot/phone and tell it to play a channel (not mp3 store, but a mp3 stream from DI.FM or other). MPG321/123 do not seem to play streams well at all.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's a bunch of command line media players. Look at mplayer, plaympeg, mpg321, cymbaline, or mp3blaster. Any one of those should do what you need.

I got that list by searching the Gentoo distribution's package list. All of the above should be available on sourceforge or something similar. Just search for the player name and "homepage" and you should find it. Chances are, there's a RedHat binary RPM already built for you for at least one of the above.

Thanks for the info, it looks like MPLAYER might be my answer, but just an FYI: None of the other players you mentioned seem to support Shoutcast/radio streams, they all support files. So most of them CANNOT deal with this as a file:
