Shift + Backspace = Trouble

Running KDE desktop 3.1, if I press Shift + Backspace, all of my work goes away and I am presented with the KDE login prompt. Any attempt to log back in is greeted with the message that KDE is already running. How do I defeat this wonderful "feature"? I looked in the KDE control center and found several keyboard shortcuts but not this one.

I would also like the name of the person whose idea this was so I can tell him/her what a clever "feature" this is for us fumble-fingered typists

I pressed this a dozen times in a dozen programs and once on the plain desktop. And nothing happened other than a few undo commands and a back command for my web browser. Perhaps you've chosen a bad keyboard config for your system and it thinks your pressing something else.

Or better yet press CTL-ALT-F7, since alt F7 doesnt seem to work on Suse, Redhat, or Mandrake. At least, not on any that I've installed, and I've used Redhat 5-9, Suse 4-8.2, and Mandrake 6-9.1 Maybe its a slackware thing? Cause I see all the slackware people telling people to press alt-F?....

I have the exact same problem. Well, I'm not sure if it's the same, but I know that I'm sent to the Login screen after I'm typing something (happened twice now). I'm pretty sure it was a shortcut of Shift + something or Ctrl + something.

Is there any way to get rid of this feature?

And do I understand correctly that if this does happen that I'm able to press Ctrl + Alt + F7 and it'll undo what just happened (i.e. send me back to the desktop I was logged onto).

Alt+F7 always seems to work for me in Suse. Do you use a graphical session manager? This is just a guess, but that may have something to do with it. The extra Ctrl key is used to skip to another session because Alt+F# is often used for other things within an X environment.

I'm guessing you probably hit Ctrl+Alt+F#, which takes you to a new terminal. Pressing Alt+F7 returns you to your XWindows session. There's really nothing to "undo"...you're just jumping from one console to another. 7 is typically where your graphical session runs.

If there isn't anything that can be done, then that is a real inconvenience. Because I'm in the middle of typing something whether it be in the terminal or on GAIM while talking to someone and I get logged out automatically without permission. There has to be something that can be done because that just seems too inconvenient a feature to have.

You may be doing something else if you're actually being logged out. What I was assuming is that you were merely jumping to another session. Ctrl+Alt+F# is a basic, and useful, feature of linux. If you have applications which use this combination, you may want to change them.

Ah ok. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Yeah, I'm being automatically logged out . It's really annoying especially in the middle of typing something. Maybe I should post a new thread somewhere.

I don't understand how you would be getting logged out....even if X crashed, you'd still be logged into tty1.
If what you're seeing is a login prompt and nothing else, I'm guessing you jumped to another session.

All I know is that I'm typing something one moment, and then everything on my screen disappears and goes black and then I'm brought to the login screen of Linux. And whats better, when I try to log back in to the user I was under (so far its only been root) I can't get back in. Although, I may not be giving it enough time. All I know is that when I try to log back in, I don't see the KDE splash screen.

BTW, I'm using KDE 3.1 I believe.
