Sharing music from linux to windows media player clients
I've made the switch to Linux now...but still have others in the house with WindowsXP and Vista.
All of our music is on the linux box...how can I share it with the windows media player clients (without samba)?

Well, Samba is the best option (and basically what you would be doing on a real Windows machine)...why don't you want to use it?

You could setup an FTP server but samba would make things easier.

I was hoping to share so that windows media player clients would see it as a shared library...UPnP, DLNA or DAAP - I know these are media sharing services, no clue what the difference is or which one windows likes.

DAAP server (iTunes, not WMP)
You can indeed set up a DAAP server, which shares music using the iTunes protocol: mt-daapd. I'm a fan, but it's only for iTunes.
Here's the Ubuntu repo description: iTunes-compatible DAAP server
Quote:
mt-daapd is a DAAP server that works with most POSIX compatible operating systems. It allows you to share your music collection over the local network using the same protocol iTunes uses, so real iTunes users may peruse your music.
Moreover, if your music is in more esoteric formats like FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, or Musepack, these can be converted on the fly to different formats (usually WAV), so that your entire music collection can be listened to by normal iTunes clients.
It also features a web interface that can be used to control components of the server, trigger database updates, and create playlists.

If you want to do UPnP media sharing, you could look into MediaTomb. Fuppes is supposed to be pretty good too, but I have had problems running the latest development version so I can't personally vouch for it.

Finally got around to installing and setting up mt-daap, and iTunes on the Windows boxes - works like a champ! I'm also finding I prefer iTunes over Media Player...
