share files over internet easily (ftp or ..?)

Hi,

I'm wondering what could be a (very) easy way to share files over the internet for non-technical users. When I do this myself, I use ftp and a webserver.

I'd like to get non-technical users to share files with each other without using too much extra applications or needing any technical knowledge. (basic security is needed, like a user/pass login)

Is FTP the only option (that could be implemented quite easily) or is there something that would really be much better suited for this?

Thanks for any tips!
