Share a hard drive over FireWire
 

Hi:
Do you know of a Linux program that can share an internal hard disk over FireWire? This is a similar idea to Apple's Target Disk Mode. A LiveCD would be perfect for this. I don't care if it's older as I am planning on using a Pentium 4 as the host.

Firewire is a way to attach some resource to the Host. It has almost nothing to do with sharing if I understand your question.

I think that most modern distro's would or could support mounting a filesystem on a drive that has been attached via firewire. This would be similar to any other attachment like usb or sata or scsi.

The next part of your question is the ability to share files. That would come under any number of ways. Some are pretty much distro dependent while others are universal almost.

Ways to share may include setting up file and cifs permissions, file and nfs permissions, setting up ftp server, may include http(s) server or things like iscsi or others.

You might wish to try knoppix 3.x to 5.x versions to start. It should allow you to share it over nfs for sure.

Almost any distro that boots might be made to work.

Apple's target disk mode feature was part of the computer's firmware and not the operating system. It allows one to use another computer's internal disk as a boot device for another. This is possible since the Firewire bus can connect host to host whereas USB can not. Target disk mode is unrelated to normal file sharing.

I have not found much information about the linux implementation of target disk mode and do not know if it is possible to use as a linux boot device. Instead you might want to look at iscsi.

'sharing' does not appear correct term. I don't know the correct term since I don't know much about FireWire. SBP-Target sounds like it does the correct thing.

For the record what I want is an old Mac I have to connect to my PC via FireWire. It needs to be FireWire as the old Mac can boot off this easily. I want the Mac to think my PC is a hard disk. This is sort of what 'Target Disk Mode' would do.(or at least my understanding of it.)
