setversion 1.4 failed: Permission denied

Recently X has begun returning this some time after it starts. What does it mean? I can't see any problem related to it.

You have a broken chroot in your xorg conf would be my guess, but we don't really know much about your problem yet.
Please run the following command and post the results.
Code:
grep -C5 setversion /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Like any phantom error (an error with no discernable symptom) it may eventually interfere with functionality.
Then again, it may not.
The one thing we know for sure is, it aint supposed to do that, so why not fix it?

I asked because I wanted to fix it. I observed that it caused no discernible symptom in hope that that would help with diagnosis, that it is a low-priority problem, and I don't know how long it's been going on because I happened to notice, not because I was looking for a cause for a problem

Additional information:

It doesn't happen if I don't switch out of X to a non-X virtual terminal. It happens to root too.

I know, I was just agreeing with you. Sorry if I came off as lecturing in the earlier post.
Now, back to the phantom error... which I think with your scrape from grep just became less phantasmal and more a garden variety configuration issue.
Code:
[ 2260.777] (II) intel(0): Modeline "1366x768"x0.0 72.30 1366 1414 1446 1526 768 771 776 790 -hsync -vsync (47.4 kHz eP)
[ 2260.789] setversion 1.4 failed: Permission denied
OK, troubleshooting display issue isn't my wheelhouse (by any means) but I'd read that as it's trying to enter a diplay mode of 1366x768 and then a bunch a stuff that looks like configuration data and then...[47.4 kHz EP] followed immediately by 2260.789] setversion 1.4 failed: Permission denied
Do we know for certain your monitor supports 1366x768 @ 47.4 kHz?
In your desktop environment, try setting the monitors resolution explicitly to 1366x768 @ 60 kHz and see if the error disappears.
