There are many other distributions that take care of finding, installing and upgrading any package you want. You just chose a "difficult" one. But slackware is nice. If you want to have such thing you should first try to install swaret. If you want something easier try Ubuntu, Suse, Mandriva. Or try Arch linux that is very similar to Slackware but comes with a package manager.

Hi

I would suggest that you have a look at a LIVE Distro first to get used to the OS,then move to an "easier" distro to use.I suggest Ubuntu or SimplyMepis or Knoppix.
Do a search for these OS (via google) and then download and burn the ISO images to CD.Put it in your CD-ROM bootup and look at the OS,this way it wont damage your current OS installed on your PC.
Once familiar with the above (firstly you will need to get used to the new desktops -- Ubuntu comes with GNOME and Knoppix/SimplyMepis comes with KDE ) then you can decide which one to install, these all have package managers which make it easy to install software.
The easiest Distro to install software on is "Linspire",it has a Click'n'Run option CNR which does everything for you,but it is subscription based and cost about $50 a year.

Swaret is a package manager for slackware. There is also slapt-get that does the same thing, but I don't know which one is the best. But if this is your first time installing linux, maybe you should start thinking of either changing distribution or, even better, reading some documentation.
Slackware is not very friendly at the begining but you can learn a lot. I found this very helpful when I started with slackware and it made me like slackware a lot.
