Setting up wireless printing on hp officejet printer

I've installed an HP officejet 4630 wireless capable printer on an old Vaio laptop that has 802.11 b/g Wireless Lan. The hplip-3.14.10 driver has been installed replacing an older version. Everything went well, and the printer prints with a USB cable.

When I used "hp-setup" in a terminal to configure wireless printing everything appeared to go well. A temporary USB cable connection was needed. A wireless connection was made when asked for my key. When I tried to print a doc LIbre office doc, nothing. Same deal with a Google doc. When I plug in the USB cable, I get printing. Tried a couple of times, but no results.

In libreoffice there click on File & select the wireless printer?
Also You need to go to Printer Settings to make the wireless printer the default.
What OS are you using & Desktop?

Sorry for the late reply Eddy1. I do have a life. All went well. I was required to provide my ip address for wireless printing. Problem is its not static, changes routinely. Is there any automatic updater out there? Also, I am using Cloud print with all my Google docs, so that's very sweet. It's desktop printing that's problematic due to the varying ip address. Any word on that? I'll try to be prompt next time.

Maybe you need to go to your router & set a static address.

Man you are an LQ addict. But how prompt is this? Thanks. I'm with Bell Canada using a Hub that connects wirelessly to a tower signal.

You should be able to assign a static IP address via the printer's front-panel. From there, run 'hp-setup', select 'Show Advanced Options', and configure manually using the relevant IP address.

I'll have to check with Bell about configuring a hub device, and asking them about getting a static ip address. Don't have a clue about configuring a hub. New to all this, but having fun learning. Also, I'll try Ferrari's recommendation. Thanks for being very helpful Eddy1 and Ferrari.

I'm back with a wonderful experience finding all the good stuff for configuring my Netgear router. Very easy, except for one big snag. Bell Canada charges it's customers for a static IP address.

setting up a wireless printer

I had success with ferrari's tip to set up a static IP address via the front panel of my hp 4630 then running hp-setup and configuring manually. One question though. Why does this work when my service provider says I have to pay for a static IP address when I wanted to configure my router. Also, I use Opendns which shows a dynamic IP address and has to be updated for the settings to apply. I don't get the difference here. The address on my printer remains constant and I can print any day any time.

As I knew you would. Well done.

Don't get yourself confused. The ISP is referring to the router's WAN address - that is the ISP-facing side of the router. We're only concerned with the LAN addressing here. For printers it is better is normal to configure with a fixed IP address, (assigned outside the DHCP server range that the router might assign to other hosts).
