Setting up VSFTP on SUSE 8.2
 

I want to start off and say I tried to put off asking for help for as long as possible, but if I don't make some progress soon my Suse 8.2 box is going out the window .. I was a Windows NT/2000 admin (stop laughing at me, I know windows or winblows as many people here refer to it isn't seen in high regard.) OK so i started a new job and a few people there kept saying how great Linux was. So I took a Pentium 1 box I had laying around and installed Suse 8.2 no GUI.. cause i wanted to learn the real way. After 4 hours I figured how to turn the box off correctly ("shutdown now") it seems so simple in hindsight..anyway... After a week I had Samba running as smooth as a whistle and was very happy with myself and also all I could do with free software.. but then i tried to configure VSFTP. The current problem i am running into is whether what I want to do is possible. I would like to replicate what I had on my windows ftp server..
which was, Access for many people.. when they connected they all started in the same root folder and had access to upload to one of the subdirectories named "Upload" and leech from a directory named "Download" and its subs. So far I started the service during boot up using Yast, I disabled anonymous access, and allowed local users to connect. and it worked when I tried to connect from a remote box using the local info.. Yahooooo!!!!! So what i was going to do was create a user account using yast for each user that was going to login. Then I saw that there was a file called vsftpd.user_list that I could add user names to and it seemed much easier when it comes time to adding and removing people.

Problem 1 - How can I have each user login and start at one directory, The directory is created already, its something like /Home/user/Public/Ftp

Problem 2 - Should I go with local user accounts or vsftpd.user_list accounts. If i Use vsftpd.user_list will i be able to specify passwords in that file, can someone show me an example file? I would prefer to use vsftpd.user_list because I really do not want the person having access to the entire box. So just know that if its possible this is my preferred method.

Sorry If i talk to much, but I thought If i give some background it may get some sympathy replies lol... The only changes I made I listed above, and all my config files are stock except for the changes above.

Ok i went with local user accounts and set each local users home dir to be /Home/user/Public/Ftp. Solved both proroblems. Thanks for the 0 replies.

Im running SUSE 8.2 too. I created virtual users and I add the line local_root=/DIRECTORY to each user permission file. Try that

I´ve many problems, I mean many problems are comming.
I just want to start an FTP-server with SuSE 9.0 an vsftp. I installed the package and now I try for nearly a week to:

1) to run the ftp-server :scratch:
2) tell this service to have users :scratch:
3) every user should have a directory :scratch:

If someone can help me, by telling me step for step what I have to do, it would be great.
