Setting up Dialup
Hey everyone,

I'm trying to setup a friends 56 K modem to work in linux. I thought that I would be easier then setting up my DSL... it isn't

She's running Mandrkake 10.0 on a Gateway computer, she's using a BroadCom V90 56 K modem. When she runs WVDIAL she gets input output errors. Can anybody help me get this setup?

I'm not a big fan of Mandrake 10 or Gateway, but...let's just ignore that fact for now. You might try rolling over to It should have a list of Winmodems (I'm assuming that the modem that you listed is a WinModem, since most are these days). They have a list there somewhere of chipsets that Linux can work with (possibly with extra software/kernel modules). It's been a LONG time since I've been there, but I think they keep the list pretty up to date.

Actually, I think it's easier to setup dsl instead of a !@#$% winmodem.
[My personal record is 1-2 for winmodem and 3-0 for dsl.]
Nevertheless, the linmodem link given earlier is the way to go
for winmodem.

Yeah, I personally have DSL. It was easy to setup, and I thought "Hey, dialup is so much older, it must be REALLY easy to setup!"

Thanks for the tips, I actually already been to that site. I was hoping that someone could give me a short cut. I'll go through it later. I"m too lazy..., I mean tired to do this now.
