Red face Setting Up CD Burner

Hey all,

My Question is about getting my IDE CD-Burner to work. Its very confusing to me :/ I've managed to get everything else up and running pretty smootly but this has got me kinda stumped. I've read through the CD-Writer HOWTO but I feel like its written for somone who already knows alot about linux.

One of the problems is when I type "cdrecord -scanbus" as per part of the instructions i get "Bash: command doesn't exist" or something quiet similar to this. One of my thoughts is that I need to upgrade to Red Hat 7.2 because right now Im using 6.2

If someone could give me some suggestions or explain setting up a cd-burner process to more of a newbie cause I'm a little lost with the HOWTO document it would be much appreciated

thanks,
sergeus

Make sure you have the package 'cdrecord' installed and that you have the correct permissions to use it. (try it as root)

If it's an IDE burner you'll still need SCSI support in the kernel (or as modules) and support for IDE devices as SCSI (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=m). Most stock kernels ship with this already.

Once this has been confirmed you can add 'hdX=ide-scsi' to your append statement in lilo.conf. replace X with your drive assignment (hdb, hdc, hdd...). Make sure you re-run /sbin/lilo after you make the changes.

Ah, yep first of all I didn't have the cdrecord package installed. The howto is making alot more sense to me now, annd I think I've found the reason why my burner isn't working.

Part of my problem seems to be that when I do a check for the sr_mod.o module it doesn't exist! I found everything else sg.o, loop.o etc.. but sr_mod.o is nowhere to be found. So I went into my RH install disk searching the kernel RPM for the sr_mod.o file but it's not there either.

Does anyone know where I can find sr_mod.o ? It may get me a step closer to getting this burner working

thanks,
-Sergeus

P.S. One other possibilty slipped my mind. You said that IDE_SCSI support needs to be enabled in the kernel.. How do I go about checking this. I just assumed it was already configured with RH 6.2.

Unhappy Fixed some problems but still not showing up.

I found the sr_mod.o and added it to my SCSI device directory with the rest of them. Unfortunetly still, when I do cdrecord -scanbus all that shows in the list is my SCSI HD on #6.

Below I have pasted my lilo.conf and conf.modules files maybe I'm making a mistake?

lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
linear
default=linux

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0.img
read-only
root=/dev/hda5
append="hdd=ide-scsi"

other=/dev/sda1
label=dos

conf.modules
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias eth0 smc-ultra
options smc-ultra io=0x280
alias sound-slot-0 sb
options sound dmabuf=1
options opl3 io=0x388
alias midi awe_wave
post-install awe_wave /bin/sfxload /etc/midi/GU11-ROM.SF2
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
options ide-cd ignore=hdd # tell the ide-cd module to ignore hdd
alias scd0 sr_mod # load sr_mod upon access of scd0
#pre-install ide-scsi modprobe imm # uncomment for some ZIP drives only
pre-install sg modprobe ide-scsi # load ide-scsi before sg
pre-install sr_mod modprobe ide-scsi # load ide-scsi before sr_mod
pre-install ide-scsi modprobe ide-cd # load ide-cd before ide-scsi

BTW,my HDs and CD-ROM Drives are setup as follows:
IDE0 - Master HD
IDE1 - Master CD-ROM Drive
Slave CD-Writer Drive
SCSI - HD on #6

Well, time to play around more.. Hopefully I'm just making a dumb mistake somewhere in here.

thanks,
-sergeus
