setting up a knowledge base
 

Hi All,

I have a box at work running RH9, and was wondering if there were any good simple and free knowledge base software packages that I could easily install and run on it. The Linux box has a static outside FTP address it is already setup as an FTP server.

Im a newbie to Linux so go easy on me! :)

well, perhaps this is overkill but I really like eGroupWare. Check it out. It is a lot more than just a knowledgebase, so it might not suit you but have a look. Look at the demo site.

Cheers, I'll take a look. A lot of these things seem to need MySQL server and Apache, does this need it too?

Also is groupware compatible with Red Hat 9 , is it free?

You could try a CMS (Content Management System) like Mambo, PostNuke, PHPNuke. A groupware option is phpGroupware. Most kb and CMS systems use a web-based interface at the client side so a web HTTP server like Apache is a must (even to run in a local machine).

These serve web pages dynamically generated using PHP from a databases, so you'd need a MySql or Postgresql server and Apache/with PHP support running. These applications can be run standalone an local machine and also in a local network environment. All of them are web server-side applications, meaning a browser is enough to run them on the client side.

Yes it needs apache, mysql and php (AMP).
Yes it is free and a very nice package. Easy to install and very active in development. If you check sourceforge you will see that it is one of the most active projects there. It is imho way ahead of most other groupware solutions.

But as Harishankar has already indicated, there are a lot of options. You could use any of the options in his reply too.
Look at the demo sites and find one you like.
