setting up 1394 and HFS mount

hi there:

i have been running Fedora Core 2 for about 6 months now and i am slowly making my transition from Mac OSX to Linux.

i am doing most of the things in Linux now apart from the very few things that i like to know how.

i have a couple of firewire1394 external hardisk and a iPod from my time of using Mac, is there a way to mount these drives on my linux? i have not tested out my 1394 connections of my laptop yet, so i guess my questions are:

1. how would i set up the 1394 connection on my laptop? what modules would i need?
2. once i got hte 1394 to work, what would i need to mount HFS file systems?

any help will be great!

many thanks

From what I know HFS is read only with VERY experimental write capabilities. I'm guessing you don't just want to read these hard disks. I know with the iPod that you can convert it to FAT32 which is fully compatible but then you would lose data and I'm guessing you have something you want on it. I might back that stuff up on another system or something and then convert them to a different filesystem that is mountable.

hi there:

thanks for youre reply!

ok, i understand. i read about read/write HFS a while back and it said the same thing, i was wondering if its got better since.

i guess i will have to get hold of a ext hardisk with more supported format to try out my 1394 connection on my laptop. anything that i should be aware of in setting up 1394? somehow i feel that it won't just the matter of plug it in and here we go.

cheers
