Setting default program in GNOME

I would like to open my images in gThumb when i doubleclick them.

I right-click an image, choose properties, and open with. There I click gthumb and then close. It still opens the picture in Eye of Gnome. However, I can rightclick a picture and select gthumb, which works. Am I stupid, or is this redicules?

Additionally, the only item I can remove from the "open with" menu is gthumb, selecting anyone else makes the remove button inresponsive.

I am using Fedora Core 3. I think I use Gnome 2.8, at least many Gnome-related packages have version number like 2.8.0-1. I understand 2.10 is a more recent version, but my system is up to date according to the repositories I use with Apt.
