Setting default printer margins in kate
 

I use kate for almost all my text editing (not word processing).
I love it, but it defaults to margins that don't work on my printers. Things get cut off at the top and bottom of the page.
The printer works fine with all my other applications - most of those allow the margins to be set in the application.

In kate, I can go to printer properties and set the margins to something that will work, but I have to do it every time I print.

Is there some way around this?

I read some posts elsewhere about using enscript. I know how to do that, but not from within kate.

Assuming you are using CUPS print server, you can do something about it.

Cups allows you to set up multiple virtual printers, even though there is only one physical printer available. You set up the printer definition for the print task, such as landscape, photo, draft greyscale, normal color, etc.

So, go into Cups setup and define a new printer, perhaps Kate-print would be a good name. Set the margins as you need them for Kate and test the setup. In the future, when you need to print using Kate, just select your Kate-print as the printer to use.

I always Print To File so I can run the output through my duplex printing emulator for non-duplex printers (duplexpr on Sourceforge). When I do that, it doesn't go through CUPS until later. I'll try sending the postscript file through an instance (I already defined one, but I think it got bypassed by the way I print) and see what it does.

I don't know how to create an instance or set margins directly in CUPS, but I use xpp and it lets me set just about anything I want to and then save the instance (or just print).
