set depth in gimp?

Hi all. I am trying to make a nice lilo splash screen. I have never used gimp or done any graphics stuff, so please excuse my ignorance.

I need the image to be
640x480 at a color depth of 16.

The size is easy enough, but I can't seem to save the bmp file w/ the correct depth (either it's below 16 or above).

I have tried the script-Fu thing that is supposed to help, but I think that's for a patched version of lilo (I can't get it to work).

The only thing that works for me is to open one of the examples in lilo's documentation and work off that, but then I can't get any red to show (needed for BSD's Daemon).

I guess I can somehow pick 16 colors to use out of 256... can anybody help me out here??

Thanks

Ctrl-P opens the color palette editor. Click on the Select tab, and select the only default palette with 16 colors, I think it's called PaintJet. Click on the Palette tab, and you can edit colors from there, or create your own palette. Use the colors in that palette to make your image, and you will have only 16 colors, max.
