I've had some experience with sensors this weekend and i can tell you that surely you have to upgrade your lm_sensors package to get things working.
Take a look in this note in the
site of lm_sensors and i2c for the kernel

So your sensors drivers works with 2.6.3 but are incompatible with 2.6.8. And the same for the user space utils.
