alrighty, so last night i decided to go ahead and do a fresh install on the server becuase i was frustrated and it made me feel good. Much to my surprise, after the fresh install sendmail actually works. From what i can remember I used the exact same steps to set it up but for some reason this time it decided to work.

BUT, theres still a problem. At first I could only send message to my own domain. Then I found out that if you set Relays to specific domains or set relaying to be promiscuous I could send to the rest of the world. The problem isnt that im leaving myself open to be a spam relay, it's that I get bounce back message from spam filters who say im a spam relay.

How do i config sendmail to send messages to the outside world without being accused of being a spam relay? If anyone could help me out or could recommend a good tutorial site other than sendmail.org I'd appreciate it.

And please please don't mention postfix. I dont want to use postfix, Im not asking about postfix, and if one more person tells me to ditch sendmail for postfix I'll give up. I understand sendmail is the harder of the two and maybe that's whats driving me to learn the darn thing.

So any sendmail related help would be much appreciated.

i dont understand why getting linux support is so hard. Why doesn't someone just write a book or make a website with easy walk through guides for basic linux apps.

No long drawn out paragraphs, just something that says if you want a basic config that works do this, this, and this. If you want to get into the more advanced setup then youre on your own.

Something like this would really help people like me who are trying to make the windows - linux switch but get frustrated becuase if you ask 10 different people how to do something you get 10 answers and sometimes what youre trying to do still doesnt work.

Well, I'm glad to see that you're back among the living. Post the contents of your /etc/hosts file and /etc/mail/access files and lets have a look. Good job on getting it running!

You simply need to setup your isp smtp server as a smart host or you will always be denied relay from many servers. This is a fact you cannot change.

If you setup your smtp to relay for anyone you will be a spam site, so don't do it. Use smtp auth.

Also be aware that some messages you receive about your server sending out spam are spam. If they have an attached file they are surely trouble. Block them out.
