sendmail can't write df files for incoming mail

Hello,
I have just installed sendmail 8.13.5 on my LFS server and am getting the following errors in the log when receiving mail. Can anybody tell me where to look to find out where it is trying to write these files? The following directories can be written to by both root and the smmsp user the docs said to create.

/var/mail

This is where I thought the mail should end up only in mail files named after the user the mail is for.

/var/spool/mqueue

I haven't seen anything in this directory yet and at this point I can't remember if the make install created it or I did but I think it should be for outgoing mail not incoming mail if in fact it is used at all.

/var/spool/clientmqueue

I have never seen this directory on any other sendmail system I have ever used but the make install did create it and I have seen outgoing mail in it.

It looks like a simple fix if I can only figure out where it is trying to write. Thanks in advance.
