Sending mail in Debian

I need to be able to send mail from a web application for a school project, but I can't figure out how. My problem is configuring mail in Linux itself. I'm new to mail in Linux, do I have to set up an SMTP server or can I just use my ISP's SMTP? How do I go about telling Linux what my SMTP server is?
