Sending binary to a usb device using echo commands?

Hi.

I'm trying to send binary commands to a usb device to remote control a digital camera.

I am trying to avoid writing C code for it (I am useless in C programming!!)

I would rather send commands using an echo command, with binary defined values in it and have them piped to a USB device.

Has anyone done this? I know it can be done with standard serial devices, but is USB different? Does it need to be interfaced at a lower level (ie C programming reuqired?)

Thanks in advance!
