send mails via linux without setting up the MUA

Hi all,
In my organisaton, i have a Linux log server in a complete windows environment. The log server works fine.. but this query is with regards to sending mails from this server. I have not setup the email account in thunderbird (or any other Mail user Agent for that matter). how do i send mails from this server? where do i setup the outgoing mail server etc. BTW i do not expect incoming mails to this ID or server.

Would it matter that the ID i use for Linux login is not registered at the Exchange server or the Active directory? I remember successfully sending mails last time to an external ID (Gmail i guess) from my Linux machine at home using basic SMTP commands (RCPT TO, FROM etc.)

TIA.

Set up a mail server such as postfix. Then establish a cron job to send emails based upon the rules that you define. This could be accomplished quite easily using either PHP or perl.

Isn't there a configuration file where i can specify the SMTP server IP? That would be easier.. so when i want to shoot mails manually with the "mail" command, it refers the same file to get the SMTP IP to send the mails to..
