Send command to VLC and record output.

Hi guys!

I need to send command to a VLC stream and save the output.

I have VLC running on a machine with a dummy interface without GUI. I need to send a command to that VLC instance and save result in a file. For example, when I run VLC from console and type playlist I get the playlist content on the screen. Is it possible to run VLC from a bash script in a background and send commands to that VLC instance (with other bash script) and save the result in a file.

Sorry for my English, hope you understand my question

Thanks in advance!

You can use the remote control interface. Start vlc in the background like this:

vlc --intf rc --rc-host localhost:4212 &
Then you can send commands using netcat

nc localhost 4212

Alternatively, you can use the telnet interface. Start vlc like this:

vlc -I telnet --telnet-password KhQzsOin
And access it from another machine (or the same machine) using TCP/IP:

nc remotehost 4212
If you want to save the output, you can redirect either the vlc or the nc output (you might want to use tee if you need it to be interactive).
