Seeking: memory test software for Ubuntu 12.04

Hi

My desktop is freezing a lot(*). I have googled some answers and most of them pointed to memory problems.
Previous versions of Ubuntu (in Grub) had a memory test option, I think but since 11.04 I have deleted the windows partition and alocated all disk to Ubuntu so, I have no Grub anymore.

I looked for memory test through Software Center and I have found Systester Pro for US$2.99 Not much but there are no avaliations and no developer website. I could not know if it even could work for what I need.

There's another one, the Thorough real-mode memory tester aka Memtest86+.
I tried it but I did not found any user manual even in the developper's website.

As it is written in Portuguese I'll show the output:
1) $sudo apt-get install memtester (it was installed already)
2) $sudo memtester 4000 5 (I have 4Gb RAM 4x1024=4096Mb)

Now what? I have a feeling. Not ZERO then *Problem* but I really do not know.
Is there any other program? There are for Windows, but I have no Windows in this machine. Not anymore.
It is a Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5700 @ 3.00GHz × 2 with a GeForce 210/PCIe/SSE2 Ubuntu 12.04 64 bits and HDD 37,9 GB (one 15Gb partition for Ubuntu, 2.0 Gb swap and all rest to /home)

(*) More often when I use XBMC Media Center in library mode, not viewing a movie. My CPU goes near the 90% use.

Try a few memory tests and for a few days. Get OEM hard drive diags too.

If the system was stable before this version then we may assume some setting may need to be changed or even go back to the prior version.

Any part from hardware to software could be at fault along with any setting or value. Don't forget to consider bios settings may help.

You don't need one, just burn it to a CD (like you would do with Ubuntu), boot from it and let it run for a few hours. If it don't show red error messages your RAM is OK.
From my experiences, freezes are most likely caused by faulty power supply units. Test if you get more freezes when the system is under heavy load (like encoding a movie or running a hardware demanding game). Also have a look at your temperatures, may be your system is overheating.

Yes, that was what I was trying to do but I could not realize how to do it.

I had always used this link to download Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/start-download...32&release=lts and I could not get the memory test to work because the CD always went in the «Try Ubuntu» mode.

Then I could find this article (in Portuguese) http://ubuntued.info/faca-download-d...ecise-pangolin and could read about an alternate download package: http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/u...nate-amd64.iso

I have used it, burned a new CD, started it and could (at last) see what I wanted: a menu with the check memory option.

After 8 hours of test and six pass times just a single byte was faulty once. I think it is no reason for replace a 4Gb memory

Although people say that the 64bits Ubuntu version is quite stable I will now try the Canonical recommended 32bits version. But this is now out of the thread subject.
