seeking "file catalog" application

Which file catalog utility helps me do this today?
Of course, today we catalog media cards, external drives, USB "geek sticks" and various CD and DVD platters.

In the days when boxes of diskettes were the norm, there were applications that would:
  • scan each diskette
  • store a list of contents into a database along with a unique diskette identifier
  • identify duplicates using various techniques including MD5SUM and similar.
  • enable collection of file description and other categorical details
  • enable database search

Where is that file? was answered by an end-user search, followed by the database query result, "Find the file on disk XXXX."

I don't need some commercial, enterprise-ready heavyweight. I would like something that works for an individual laptop or for a family(sic) of workstations and external media.
