seeking "automount" notification and scripting

I want to do something with AUTOMOUNT that I used to do back in my mainframe (aka, DEC10 & VAX/VMS) days.

I want to get an on-screen dialog box that asks me to connect and power-on an external drive whenever something tries to access the drives designated mount-point.

Back in the day, applications would request access to data and an Operator console would get a request to make the appropriate data available. Yes, some of this happened because the application supplied the operator request. However, there was configuration that enabled and automatic request under certain circumstances.

Given that AUTOMOUNT already will do most of this, er, automatically, all I need is a way to cause an appropriate dialog or notifier to appear then wait for the keyboard jockey to say OK.

Thanks in advance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
There is a program that accepts a trigger and executes the desired action based on that trigger. I can't remember the name of it. But such a thing does exist. There's also incrond, the inotify cron daemon, but I'm not sure if inotify works with merely attempting to access a file system.
