Seeking advice on building server
Hi folks,
I'm prepared building a server providing following functions;
1) free web hosting on Internet
2) free webmail service on Internet
3) as database and file server serving LAN
At the beginning Xfce4 will be run as desktop which is considered necessary to run web browser for searching technical documents on Internet. Text browser is not so convenient, in my personal opinion. I ran elinks, etc. before. After finishing fine tuning the server X will be removed. Then a workstation will be connected to the server replacing its job.
CentOS will be the platform. What will be the basic packages needed?
Please provide some guidance. TIA
B.R.

Not quite sure what you mean by hosting, but CentOs comes with
Apache for webserving
If you want to set up mailserver, you can use sendmail or postfix (CentOs comes with both), an IMAP server (dovecot for postfix, not sure for sendmail) and use squirrelamil or similar for a web interface
MySQL or similar for datatbase and Samba for fileserving.
That should get you close

"dovecot for postix"? Whether installing dovecot I can leave postfix?

Is it webmail?
I don't have Windows PC here. Do I need Samba or some other packages?
Others noted with tks.

Postfix is an MTA (mail transfer agent), Dovecot is an IMAP server - you need both
Yes squirrelmail is a web interface to email - you need php installed as well
Some people seem to suggest using Samba for inter linux serving as well in preference to nfs. What do you want to do here?

I think I'll come back to Samba which I ran several years ago sharing files between Linux and Windows. I'm now tuning Ubuntu-6.06.1-LAMP-server-amd64 and got some problem on nfs-kernel-server.
