security for backups (tar command)

needing some security for some backup files and such. i use tar gzip commands at the moment for the backup files. would feel better if i had some security surrounding them. does anyone know of a good way....or does tar have any security or encryption or password that can be associated with it? thnx for the help

The most simple solution would probably be using GnuPG to encrypt the archives after they are created. If you have backup scripts already adding the gpg command to them shouldn't be too hard.
