Searching offline tar archives

I have created a Bash script that creates compressed archives, using tar, of all my important files.

These backup tar archives will then be moved offsite. Is there a Linux program that I can use to make a database of the file names archived so that at a later date I can search the database to find out what file is on what backup?

I used to use a program on Windoze called something like CD Database which did this very thing.

any of the sql type db programs cpuld be used look at the tar manpage as well to see how to list archive contents etc
