Searching for an audio player
 

I used Rhythmbox for a long time, but I've recently "switched" to openbox, and I don't want a load of GNOME libs and files tainting my clean OS. :D

Also, I don't want any QT apps, by virtue of the fact that I am doing fine with only GTK installed and don't want extra libs.

I prefer an audio player on the lighter side. I've been tinkering with Audacious but I guess I just haven't taken to it.

If you're mostly playing mp3s, you could just use mpg123

Depends on what you want them to do. If you are looking for more "complete" ones than audacious you might want to look into aqualung and exaile.

cli would be moc or xmms2

small gui ones would be a lot, besides audacious i also use alsaplayer-gtk

and tons of others...

if it was me i would simply stick with rythmbox, in case you like it.

As far as I am concerned, XMMS is still the real deal.

It may be legacy software, but, if you don't care about playlists and tags and rankings and that sort of stuff--and I don't--it is still the best. And it can use all my old Winamp 3 skins. Also, a search for "XMMS skins" turns up lots of native XMMS skins still available.

Otherwise, I use VLC, because, if it won't play in VLC, it won't play on Linux.

It works on Lenny and Squeeze.

I had it running on Lenny and it survived the upgrade to Squeeze.
