For what language(s)? A checker for grammar and style would have to be quite language-specific, I think. I have used an MSDOS grammar checker (copyright about 1991, possibly titled Rightwriter) that not only checks grammar but judges text for four different audiences, from simple newspaper-level writing to university-paper writing. It wasn't perfect, but would make helpful suggestions. It processed plain text and produced plain-text reports. There are so many file formats (tex, html, etc) and the work needed to make a good grammar checker is so much that a program that operates on plain text instead of being restricted to a specialized format would be more useful. Can your Latex editor save in plain text?
