SDL_image library not found!

I installed a game that required SDL library. During the check done by the game
it was noticed that sdl_config scripti could not be found. According to Synaptic
sdl packages should have been installed. After some googling I found an advice
that sdl should be installed again from sdl source. So I downloaded the latest sdl
version 1.2.9 from libsdl.org untar the source and did
./configure
make
make install (as root)
ldconfig (as root)

No errors. Now when I try to compile the game I got error message
IMG Load in -lSDL_image .... no
error:*** SDL_Image library not found!

I have done heavy googling and only advice I have found is
that in this case SDL_image is missing, install it!
That didn't help much. I knew the missing part without this great advice.

There isn't any SDL_image tar.gz in sdl.org. There isn't any other instructions
in SDL README or INSTALL than those mentioned above. So how I
make SDL_image and install it from SDL_1.2.9???
Or am I missing some configuration somewhere or environmentel variable setting?

I am using Debian 3.1.

Hi.

I got the same problem. Followed the link: http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_image/

Downloaded the file.SDL_image-1.2.5.tar.gz. Still does the same.

Am I doning something wrong or getting the wrong files?
