SDL update in SuSE x86_64 question

Hi everyone!
I need to update my SDL lib to a more up to date version so that I can get SDL_image-devel from libsdl.org (its dumb that its not with SuSE 10.0).
The problem is that, I have SuSE 10.0 64-bit version and the current libs at libsdl.org only has 32-bit versions.
What should I do to update SDL without compromising my system stability?

Thanks

Is this opensuse?
if so, maybe try asking at one of the Web Forums listed here:
