SDL Compiling Help

I recently downloaded the Simple Direct media Layer header files and created the first sample program, but when I tried to compile it using CC I got many errors in the object file, but the example programs compiled fine using MAKE they compiled fine. I could get the program to compile by cp ing the source to one of the folders of the examples and typing MAKE. I assume that this means that I am not using proper flags for the compile, so what am I not doing that I need to do to make it work?

Thanks in advance.
