SDL can't find video/sound after update

I just did an emerge --update --newuse world in gentoo, and now my SDL doesn't work. When I start programs including Qemu, I get various errors saying that sdl cannot find the sound device and that it can't find the video device. I have no idea what to do. Granted, kde can't find my sound card either (which it used to be able to do). Does this make sense to anyone?

Thanks,
-Peter
