SD card reader not functioning:

Hi I cannot access my factory SD card reader. I am using Mint 18.04
The reader was functioning well until I apparently forgot to "eject" the card last time I used it, now the computer does not see the drive when I insert a card. I have had this problem before when running Ubuntu. It seems the only fix is to re-install the operating system. I am wondering if there is a simple way to get the reader working again and why does this occur? Tukatz

You need to narrow down the list of suspects, which includes the OS, the card reader, and the card itself.

Boot to a live CD of something not *buntu-based and test the card reader under the live CD. Make sure to test the card in a card reader on a different computer to make sure the card is in working order. Also, if you have (or can borrow) a different card, test with that.

If the card works in another computer, but in with the Live CD, it could be that the card reader itself is damaged.

card reader not working:

Very strange: I plugged an external card reader in to a usb port and it read my SD card. Later I tried another card in the built in reader and it worked, then I returned to the previous card I was trying to access and now it works again. I've never seen this happen before and I have no explanation for what happened but I'm pleased the reader is working. Thanks Frank for the tips. Tukatz
