Script that puts text on an image?

I'm doing a project on an embedded board, and would like to put the version number, compilation date etc. onto the splash screen and a few other places. The splash screen is a .bmp image.

Does anyone know a way to do this from a script? Are there any command-line tools that let you do this?

You would need ImageMagick for that.
