Use the import command or The Gimp has a screenshot capture tool in File > Acquire

"Simple" way that works pretty much everywhere is to use "xwd -root -out filename.xwd"

The resulting file is uncompressed.

Most people probably use different methods.

find the imaga magick package for slackware(i dont know if it comes pre-installed) and then issue the command:
import -w root <filename.jpg>
of course you can also use GIMP or tons of other screenshot apps.
import is good has many more options...about which you can read in its manpages.

In gimp you can do a timed screenshot where it'll do it in a certain number of seconds. That way you can switch to another desktop and not have gim in the way!
