Screen Problem please help?


Hello I am new with Linux and am having a problem in Red Hat 5.1 yes I know its old I am going to change that soon but any way when I start X windows my resolution is always set to high for the monitor and the screen gets scrambled I am running a ATI Xpert 98 8meg video card and a Compaq SVGA Monitor capable to run 1024x768 but better in 800x600 wich is what I use any one have the solution I have been muddleing around with xf86config for two days, also I have a old 486DX66mhz with linux on it it runs great only in x windows the desktop screen is bigger then the real screen and you scrool around with the mouse like as if the virtual screen is turnd on but I never turned it on and would like a tip thanks.

Did you run Xconfigurator, try to select lower depth (16 bit)

You could post us the contents of the xf86config or the xf86config-4 file under the /etc directory. I suppose you're using a really old version of XFree86.

ok I will see what I can do as I am not very good at running the main command line but I will try, do you wan't the entire content of the file? or just the area of where it sets up the video card and monitor?
